About HygieneScore

HygieneScore is a free, independent website that makes it easy to search and explore food hygiene ratings for restaurants, takeaways, cafes, pubs, hotels, and other food businesses across the United Kingdom.

Where does the data come from?

All food hygiene rating data is sourced from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) via their public API. The FSA works with local authorities across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland to inspect food businesses and assign ratings from 0 (urgent improvement necessary) to 5 (very good) under the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS).

In Scotland, the Food Hygiene Information Scheme (FHIS) is used instead, which provides a simpler “Pass” or “Improvement Required” result rather than a numeric score.

How often is the data updated?

We import data from the FSA API regularly to keep our records as current as possible. However, there may be a short delay between when the FSA publishes a new rating and when it appears on this site. For the most up-to-date information, always check the official FSA website.

What can I do on this site?

  • Search for any food business by name or postcode
  • Browse cities to see ratings in your area
  • View rankings to discover which cities have the best and worst hygiene ratings
  • Explore interactive maps showing establishments colour-coded by their rating
